Liver Cancer Risk Factors

• Liver cancer has risk factors for certain people more than others and these are:

• The person with chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus, or hepatitis C virus.

• The person who has cirrhosis, this is a condition that has caused scarring to form on the tissue of the liver and thereby increases the chances of liver cancer.

• People with diabetes because it is a blood sugar disorder have a higher chance of liver cancer. This is twice as high if the person has diabetes and also has hepatitis C.

• People who have been exposed to contaminated foods that have aflatoxins have a higher risk. Aflatoxins can occur in corn, peanuts and soybeans.

• People who drink excessive amounts can cause irreversible liver damage and create a higher risk for liver cancer.

• This type of cancer can affect anyone of any age but men are at a higher risk than women.

Family history

People who have family members with liver cancer may be more likely to get Liver Cancer.


Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer today and there has been an increase in this type of cancer due to the rise in chronic hepatitis C that is an infection that can cause liver cancer.


In North America, Liver Cancer occurs more often in people over age 60 than in younger people.
