Dangers of Statin Drugs: What You Haven’t Been Told About Popular Cholesterol-Lowering Medicines


Of course, statins inhibit the production of cholesterol–they do this very well. Nowhere is the failure of our medical system more evident than in the wholesale acceptance of cholesterol reduction as a way to prevent disease–have all these doctors forgotten what they learned in Biochemistry 101 about the many roles of cholesterol in the human biochemistry? Every cell membrane in our body contains cholesterol because cholesterol is what makes our cells waterproof–without cholesterol we could not have a different biochemistry on the inside and the outside of the cell. When cholesterol levels are not adequate, the cell membrane becomes leaky or porous, a situation the body interprets as an emergency, releasing a flood of corticoid hormones that work by sequestering cholesterol from one part of the body and transporting it to areas where it is lacking. Cholesterol is the body’s repair substance: scar tissue contains high levels of cholesterol, including scar tissue in the arteries.

Cholesterol is the precursor to vitamin D, necessary for numerous biochemical processes including mineral metabolism. The bile salts, required for the digestion of fat, are made of cholesterol. Those who suffer from low cholesterol often have trouble digesting fats. Cholesterol may also protect us against cancer as low cholesterol levels are associated with increased rates of cancer.

Cholesterol is vital to proper neurological function. It plays a key role in the formation of memory and the uptake of hormones in the brain, including serotonin, the body’s feel-good chemical. When cholesterol levels drop too low, the serotonin receptors cannot work. Cholesterol is a major component of the brain, much of it in the myelin sheaths that insulate nerve cells and in the synapses that transmit nerve impulses.

Some researchers believe that cholesterol acts as an antioxidant.2 This is the likely explanation for the fact that cholesterol levels tend to go up with age. As an antioxidant, cholesterol protects us against free radical damage that leads to heart disease and cancer.

Finally, cholesterol is the precursor to all the hormones produced in the adrenal cortex including glucocorticoids, which regulate blood sugar levels, and mineralocorticoids, which regulate mineral balance. Corticoids are the cholesterol-based adrenal hormones that the body uses in response to stress of various types; they promote healing and balance the tendency to inflammation. The adrenal cortex also produces sex hormones, including testosterone, estrogen and progesterone, out of cholesterol. Thus, low cholesterol–whether due to an innate error of metabolism or induced by cholesterol-lowering diets and drugs–can be expected to disrupt the production of adrenal hormones and lead to blood sugar problems, edema, mineral deficiencies, chronic inflammation, difficulty in healing, allergies, asthma, reduced libido, infertility and various reproductive problems.

Enter the Statins

Statin drugs entered the market with great promise. They replaced a class of pharmaceuticals that lowered cholesterol by preventing its absorption from the gut. These early drugs often had immediate and unpleasant side effects, including nausea, indigestion and constipation, and in the typical patient they lowered cholesterol levels only slightly. Patient compliance was low: the benefit did not seem worth the side effects and the potential for use was very limited. By contrast, statin drugs had no immediate side effects: they did not cause nausea or indigestion and they were consistently effective, often lowering cholesterol levels by 50 points or more.

Lemons are a widely used citrus crop and have shown several potential health benefits. In the present study, the mechanism and effectiveness of the anti-cancer and anti-aromatase properties of limonoids were investigated for the first time. Defatted lemon (Citrus lemon L. Burm) seed powder was extracted with ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH) for 16 h each, successively. These extracts were fractionated using 1D (silica) and 2D (ion exchange and SP-70 columns) column chromatography to obtain nine limonoids. The compounds were identified by TLC, HPLC, and LC-MS techniques. A panel of 9 purified limonoids, including limonin, nomilin, obacunone, limonexic acid (LNA), isolimonexic acid (ILNA), nomilinic acid glucoside (NAG), deacetyl nomilinic acid glucoside (DNAG), limonin glucoside (LG) and obacunone glucoside (OG) as well as 4 modified compounds such as limonin methoxime (LM), limonin oxime (LO), defuran limonin (DL), and defuran nomilin (DN), were screened for their cytotoxicity on estrogen receptor (ER)-positive (MCF-7) or ER-negative (MDA-MB-231) human breast cancer cells. We further tested the mechanism of the anti-proliferative activity of limonoids using an in vitro aromatase enzyme assay and western blot with anti-caspase-7. Among the tested limonoids, 11 limonoids exhibited cytotoxicity on MCF-7 whereas 8 limonoids showed cytotoxicity against the MDA-MB-231 cell lines. Although most of the limonoids showed anti-aromatase activity, the inhibition of proliferation was not related to the anti-aromatase activity. On the other hand, the anti-proliferative activity was significantly correlated with caspase-7 activation by limonoids. Our findings indicated that the citrus limonoids may have potential for the prevention of estrogen-responsive breast cancer (MCF-7) via caspase-7 dependent pathways.

Survivor – Ovarian Cancer

I am a “miracle survivor” of advanced ovarian cancer diagnosed 28 yrs ago! I had maximum allowed chemo – the most aggressive available at the time and it failed. Some theorize that perhaps the chemo failed because I was taking such high doses of anti-oxidants – BUT, that same chemo does not appear to be curing the thousands of other women with ovarian cancer who are not following a vitamin regimen!

And within 3 days after my first chemo, after reading Linus Pauling’s book and research and following his megavitamin cancer regimen, my gums stopped bleeding and my bruises cleared up. I gradually increased my dose to a daily intake of 40 GRAMS of C, plus I took E and selenium and other vitamins.

I juiced, ate organic food, practiced visualization, self-hypnosis to raise my blood counts, attended support groups.

Because there were numerous studies being conducted about the medical benefits of cannabis for cancer patients, I was fortunate to participate and the cannabis helped my nausea and definitely increased my appetite despite the intense abdominal treatments I received, because the cancer had spread to my abdominal cavity.

Later, after the chemo failed to eradicate the tumor cells, docs were amazed that my skin did not burn from the max dosage of radiation I received to my entire torso daily for 6 wks.

I had a 30% chance of living 5 more years and after the radiation I was told they had given me every possible treatment and there was nothing left for me but to go home and return for checkups every few months. Recently, I learned that women who did not die of the ovarian cancer (most did), died of kidney failure from the metal based chemotherapy, cisplatin, on of the 3 chemo drugs I was given.

Recent research has shown that lab rats given anti-oxidants with the cisplatin showed far less kidney damage than the rats given the chemo without anti-oxidants (C,E and Selenium). This explains why my kidneys took 27 years to reach late stage renal failure, unlike other patients who died of failed kidneys shortly after chemo was completed.

So, Linus Pauling’s theories not only were key in my recovery from ovarian cancer, but also saved my kidneys for many years from the brutal assault of the metallic chemo. It is also a shame that radiation is rarely offered to American women with ovarian cancer. The pharm lobby is far too powerful here. I personally got to know other cancer patients in my support groups and later in my work.

The patients who somehow “miraculously” were cured after being diagnosed in late stages of some of the most lethal cancers were patients who changed their lifestyles and their diets dramatically. They switched to organic food with a major emphasis on vegetarianism. They became informed and self-educated and ate consciously for nutrition and not only did their cancers disappear, but they looked more youthful and healthy and felt better than ever before.

High doses of vitamin C do cause diarrhea, however, interestingly, cancer patients seem to be able to tolerate higher doses of C than other people. The most important thing to remember is that chemo is designed to destroy cells and someone has to pay attention to building the patient’s health to withstand the treatments and to fight back with a healthy immune system. Cancer patients MUST gather all their strength and FOCUS on building their bodies, even while undergoing conventional therapy.

BE PROACTIVE. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND YOU WILL FIND YOU MIGHT CRAVE THE FOODS YOU NEED. I had a powerful craving for raw broccoli when I was dealing with the cancer and in those days broccoli’s benefits were not recognized as they are now. I also made and ate tabouli salad with fresh vegetables daily – again, not knowing the benefits of fiber, just trying to be healthy and follow my own cravings. I ate natural yogurt daily and even brought my own food with me to the hospital for my overnight chemo treatments. I forced myself to eat despite tremendous nausea from the treatment to my stomach. The probiotics, the natural bacteria in the yogurt, are very beneficial for chemo patients.

I wish strength and courage to all who somehow find their way to this review for yourself or your loved one who is fighting cancer. Read Linus Pauling and other genuises who believe in adjunctive therapies or so-called alternative therapies. There is nothing unusual or alternative about good nutrition – it is common sense! My oncologist knew everything I was doing and did not object. His positive attitude and respect for my role in my own recovery had a great deal to do with saving my life. [end of review]

Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C is a very good solution to therapeutic dosing of vitamin C, it is easily absorbed.  It’s a bit more pricey than ascorbic acid. People would do much better if they’d do the alternative natural protocols first instead of the cut, burn, poison protocol of the current traditional medicine industry.  From her testimony if she’d not used traditional methods she would have healed the cancer anyway but without the kidney issues that developed as a result of traditional methods of treatment.

Gregory Grosbard of Miami, Florida received a U.S. patent on a process to improve the strength of plastic by using sugar. Each time plastic goes through a heat cycle, it loses strength because oxygen in the atmosphere goes into the material and creates oxygen “holes.” Mr. Grosbard found that, by mixing a small amount of sugar into the plastic material during the heat cycle, the sugar grabbed the oxygen first, preventing the oxygen holes and making the plastic stronger.

*Processed sugar blocks the absorption of calcium. Processed sugar produces a low oxygen environment. Processed sugar is extremely acidic. Too much processed sugar is the death of the immune system. It interrupts the Kreb’s energy cycle which in turn suppresses your immune system’s manufacture of killer cells and antibodies.

Processed sugar depletes B vitamins which is needed by the liver to detoxify it. The liver is the most important organ when it comes to healing the body.  Sugar does stop hiccups.

The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a study that used sugar successfully to stop hiccups in 19 out of 20 people; some of whom had been hiccupping for as long as 6 weeks.

Cancer has become the number one **killer disease in children** in the past few years. Sugar consumption is robbing the oxygen out of their little bodies and making their cells extremely acidic while shutting off their immune systems. Sugar averages for children are around 36 teaspoons a day.

The next time you feel like having a soda, just think about this: Colas
are extremely acidic with a pH of approximately 2.5. It takes 32 glasses of
water with a pH of 10 to neutralize that one cola. And, keep in mind that
most water is relatively neutral with a pH of 7.2; water with a pH of ten is
approximately one thousand times more alkaline than your run of the mill
glass of water.

The other night the news showed a small boy who had just had chemotherapy.
His face and eyes showed the horrors he had been through and he appeared
to be lifeless and unwilling to live due to being physically destroyed by
the poisons (mustard gas). His doctor and loved ones stood over him with a
vanilla milk shake in an effort to make him feel better. They were giving him
more acid elements (milk shake – sugar) causing his cellular pH to drop
more into the pH range that cancer needs to survive within. God forbid.

Alas, I cannot recommend the use of sugar substitutes such as Nutrasweet,
which is made from aspartame. Aspartame is 10% wood alcohol — which your
body metabolizes into various carcinogens! (One of them is DKP–which may
cause brain tumors.) Fully three-quarters of all non-drug complaints to the
FDA involve aspartame. Complaints include headaches, dizziness, mood
changes, numbness, vomiting, nausea, muscle cramps and spasms, abdominal pain,
vision problems, skin lesions, memory loss and seizures.

You are the only one who can change the circumstances that are slowly
destroying you and your children. Although we can give you information, ultimately
you are responsible for your health.

Use sugar and allow it to steal the oxygen and calcium which depletes life and, bit by bit, weaken you and strengthen the environment that cancer needs to grow.

Also, one must undesrstand that most “sugar” in processed foods is not sugar at all but High Fructose Corn Syrup, which uses mercury in it’s processing.
